Fact or Fiction: Cold or Hot Dogs?

Is it Fact or is it Fiction: It is safe to eat hot dogs cold right out of the package. The answer: FICTION - Hot dogs can contain Listeria monocytogenes, a harmful bacterium that can grow at refrigeration temperatures and is common to hot dogs and their juices.  Hot dogs must be thoroughly cooked to 74°C/165°F to ensure that all bacteria present are killed. For more information on safe cooking practices, visit ottawa.ca/health and follow us on Twitter.
