If you’re looking to make healthier eating and lifestyle choices, read here. As far as making them more appealing, there will just be certain Vegetables that you favor and will like being made certain ways. Vegetables aren’t my favorite either because I didn’t grow up with much of them. My salads consisted of nothing but lettuce and Italian dressing because I hated anything else in it, and I began to change that when I began to change to a healthy lifestyle less than a year ago. So, you just need to find what works for you. Simple changes like putting spinach on sandwiches or having spinach salads with fruits and veggies in them will help. If you like Stir-fry or if you kind of like it and can maybe get used to it, that is something good you can have tons of veggies in. You just need to experiment. The more healthy foods you eat, the more appealing it will all be to you. If you experiment more with vegetables, you’ll find out which ones are your favorites and how you like them cooked. read more..
To see if the manager was there and had read my application that I turned in the other week and noticed 99% of the people in there were all doing cardio. Treadmills, bikes, whatever else was in there. Then I looked over at the weights areas and didn’t see anyone. I don’t have a Gym Membership and have never even been to a real gym, but I pictured how weird it’d look, me being the little tiny girl pumping iron while everyone else is running. It made me giggle a little on the inside. How cute that’d be. I missed class today to… go do a job thing which was a one time thing so I made up my lost work out at home for maybe about 40 minutes. I usually feel less motivated to do a lot when I’m at home, but I did the first half in my ugly backyard in the 65 degree warm winter weather, then went inside to finish when my neighbors dogs came out to bark at me. I started with jump rope, did a few workouts like push ups and bicycle crunches, lunges, then back to jump rope, and did that a few times between my other workouts. Did some more work with weights and tried to get in a lot more core workouts since I’ve been neglecting my abs and paying more attention to the little bumps forming on my arms. I tried doing a little bit of yoga but I didn’t feel like it so I did one Sun Salutation, a mix of a and b, with the warrior and without the seated position in b. Then stretched my legs, did camel, and drank the last half of my odwalla mango protein drink. Then I had an accident with my 2 day old expired (which I knew) vanilla chai drink and now I hope I don’t get sick from it (because I freak out over this stuff.) Just thought I’d share. I don’t know why. Now going to clean up and stuff my face with food and shower in no particular order (but I’ll probably clean first). read more..
Yes, of course you can! You don’t NEED the gym, but I find that working out in a place like that, around people who are working out, is more motivational. All you really need to lose weight and live healthy is yourself. You can lose 50 pounds by the middle of June if you really try. A healthy diet, cardio, and weight resistance (your workout videos) will do just that. Make sure you are in between a healthy calorie range. The more muscle you gain, the more you’ll burn. And make sure you are drinking plenty of water, getting enough sleep, things like that effect your metabolism a lot. You can do it (: read more..
This report outlines a proposal for a Renewed Strategy for a Smoke-Free Ottawa, designed to protect children and non-smokers from second-hand smoke (SHS) and to reduce tobacco use. The proposed strategy includes a significant increase in programming for people who want to quit; new smoke-free regulations to protect people from SHS and a public awareness, community engagement and advocacy strategy designed to make Ottawa a healthier city for all. OPH is recommending to the Ottawa Board of Health (BOH), the Community and Protective Services Committee (CPSC) and City Council that existing smoke-free regulations be amended, beginning this year, to prohibit smoking on: · All municipal properties, including parks, playgrounds, beaches, sports fields, fruit and vegetable markets and outdoor areas around City facilities; and · Outdoor restaurant and bar patios and terraces. These initiatives have been developed after extensive public consultation and research and do not require additional funding to enforce or to deliver enhanced services. OPH’s consultations and public opinion research indicate that Ottawa residents strongly support creating more smoke-free spaces. If the recommendations in this report are adopted by Council, Ottawa will join a growing number of municipalities that have made such places smoke-free. SHS is a known health hazard and studies have found that it can be as toxic outdoors as indoors (1-12). Sadly, every year 1,000 smokers and non-smokers in Ottawa die prematurely of tobacco related illness (13). Smoking and SHS has a financial cost as well, including $2 billion in direct health care costs to the Ontario economy (14). For Ottawa residents, hospitalization costs alone due to smoking-related illnesses are almost $40 million per year (13). The purpose of the proposed regulatory amendments is to reduce public exposure to SHS and the resulting risk of tobacco related chronic illness. The proposed amendments are part of an overall OPH strategy to protect children and non-smokers from SHS exposure, reduce smoking rates, increase tobacco cessation attempts, reduce tobacco use initiation, and improve health outcomes such as reducing heart attacks, respiratory illness and cancer. The regulations would complement community engagement activities that will advance smoke-free policies in settings such as hospitals and post-secondary campuses, doorways, hotels, motels and bed and breakfast establishments, spectator events, multiple unit dwellings, and outdoor worksites such as construction sites. A phased-in approach for enforcement of the regulatory amendments is recommended. Beginning with awareness raising and warnings, fines would not be levied until three months after the amendments take effect. It is anticipated that there would be a high degree of voluntary compliance and, as a result enforcement is recommended to be predominantly complaint-driven and would not require additional by-law staff or other resources. Enforcement would be accompanied by a parallel strategy that includes a public awareness campaign to inform the public of the regulatory changes and to increase awareness of the health risks of tobacco smoke and the dangers of water-pipe use.Full Report here read more..
tumblrgym:Fitness1. Planks for crunches. Okay okay, have we said this enough? Crunches may not be the secretto six-pack abs. Give planks a try instead to work that whole core. Extra points for holding it for a minute straight!2. Interval workout for relaxed run. Congrats on that 20-mile marathon. Now try a 20-minute interval run that involves lots of sprinting with some walking recovery. It may kick up the heat even more.3. Incline for flat treadmill. In a perfect, outdoor world, flat roads rarely exist. (Sorry, Midwestern readers!) Add some hills to that treadmill run by cranking up the incline, and feel the muscle-building burn!4. Zumba for elliptical. Trash that Cosmo-reading elliptical routine and surprise the body with a fun, calorie-burning cardio session. Sure beats staying stuck to a machine. 5. Dynamic for static stretching. Stretching out cold muscles could lead to injury. So incorporate some active movement into a stretching routine— try lunges and arm swings before working out.6. Warming up for rushing right to it. We know that barbell looks tempting. But before hitting the weight rack, do an active warm-up to loosen up limbs and get the most out of the workout.7. Standing for sitting at a desk. How often does someone complain about having to sit in a cubicle all day? We have a simple solution (no college degree required)… stand. Use a pile of books to prop up the computer, or purchase one of these.8. Exercise ball for office chair. Okay, we get it. Some people really don’t want to stand at their cubicle. So stay seated, but on a Swiss ball! It can help with balance and that six-pack. Fitness at the fingertips!9. Gym for napping. Falling asleep at the wheel? Pull over. Tired in front of the TV? Hit the gym. It provides a big boost of energy and burns calories.10. Free weights for machines. Skip the big machines (they’re sweaty anyway) and go for the little guys— free weights are more versatile and allow for a full range of motion in the joints.11. Pull-ups for bicep curls. Isolating muscles is so 2011. Pull-ups are not only impressive (I can do two, thankyouverymuch) but they work way more than one muscle. Talk about multi-tasking.12. Squats for leg press. Forget staying seated to work out the legs. Amp up the training sesh and do some squats to strengthen all the leg muscles, with some gluteus maximus work in there, too!13. Personal trainer for guessing games. Just when we think we’ve had enough, trainers may help push us through that second set of burpees. Look for a deal online to cut the cost in half!14. Foam rolling for static stretching. Need to get the knots out? Try using a foam roller instead of sitting and stretching to the toes. It’s almost like a personal massage.15. Exergames for Mario Kart. Mario may be booking it through the race course, but holding the remote control does next to nothing for our own heart rate. Try out Wii Fit or Just Dance— they’re designed to provide light to moderate exercise.16. Rowing for biking. How often can we row, row, row a boat indoors? Take advantage of the rowing machine instead of the good ’ol bike; it’s a super upper and lower body exercise.17. Stairs for escalator. We’ve heard the tip a million times, so here it is for the millionth plus one. If the option’s available, go the old-fashion route and climb the stairs to burn some extra calories.18. Fun workout for dreaded one. Loathe the elliptical? Try the stair-master. Hate the bench press? Do push-ups instead. We can still challenge ourselves without doing exercises we hate.19. Active date for dinner and a movie. Save a night at that French restaurant for retirement and go on a fun, active winter date with a special someone. Sledding can be just as intimate as duck confit, and it sneaks in a hill-climbing workout, too.20. Parking farther away for getting a spot up close. There’s no need to circle the parking lot five times looking for the perfect spot. Just park further away and walk the extra read more..

YOUR STOMACH SHOULDN'T BE A WASTE BASKET: An engine will only run right if given proper fuel. Put something in that it isn’t designed for and it will either run poorly, or not run at all. Our bodies are like that. Everyone knows, you have to eat to live. However, we shouldn’t just eat anything. A wastebasket is where you put junk. This should not be your stomach. Nutrition is extremely important if you are hoping to perform well. It is no surprise that a proper diet is linked to better performance and better health. Have you ever heard the saying you are what you eat?? Think about that, If you put trash into your body and are inconsistent with proper nutrition, you will develop serious health problems, you might lose sleep, have lack of energy, get depressed, gain weight and the list could go on and on....It is very rightly said don't dig your grave with your own knife and fork !!!!!!!!! read more..

fromgymtoslim:chasefear:“Ahhh…” Satisfaction (sat-is-fak-shuhn); who doesn’t love that wonderful feeling after a good, healthy meal? Below are some key pieces of advice on keeping you satisfied, both faster and longer.1.) Fiber: Foods that are full of fiber fill you up with fewer calories. Fiber is found in complex carbs that come from whole grain products such as bread, pasta, cereal, etc. Fiber is also found in many fruits and vegetables. Avoid simple carbs (refined flour) such as candy, soda, and other junk food.2.) Fruits and veggies: Not only are fruits and veggies loaded with fiber, but they are also loaded with good ole’ H2O. Eat your water; hydration never tasted this good! Have the mid-morning/afternoon munchies? Grab an apple, orange, etc. to keep your hunger at bay until your next meal.3.) Lean protein: Protein is ranked high amongst the foods that help keep you feeling satisfied for a longer time frame. Protein doesn’t have to come from lean meats such as chicken, fish, or turkey. Protein can also come from eggs, fat-free Greek yogurt, and beans. Change things up and you’ll never get bored with healthy eating!4.) Good fats: We need fat for survival (insulation/nutrient absorption) and people are often afraid of the word “fat” when it comes to food choices for obvious reasons. There are such things as good fats, as long as the fats are monounsaturated or polyunsaturated. Foods that contain healthy fats include almonds, avocados, olive oil, etc. Stick to the serving sizes! Although healthy, they are high in calories. Avoid foods high in saturated/trans fats!5.) Drink water: Some people have a lot of trouble recognizing the difference between hunger pangs and thirst (dehydration). If you’re thirsty, you’re already dehydrated. Try drinking a glass of cold water and if the pang still persists, enjoy a well-balanced meal or healthy snack! And if it’s gone, now you’re hydrated and you’ve boosted your metabolism. WARNING: Refrain from drinking empty calories!6.) Start smart: Begin your meal with a broth based soup or veggie salad with low fat dressing. Doing this will cause your belly to feel satisfied much sooner when you are served the main course, lessening the chance of binging/over-eating. These 2 food choices allow you to eat in bulk without adding a lot of extra calories to your day.7.) Smaller plate: In a society filled with super-size-deluxe-have-it-all food options served on what can be considered family-sized serving dishes, it’s easy to become astray in sensible portioning. Try eating off/out of smaller dishes. You’ll subconsciously trick yourself into thinking you’re eating more. Dig in! Now you can clean your entire plate and feel satisfied (not stuffed) at the same time.8.) Eat breakfast: It’s never a good idea to skip a meal, especially breakfast! Your chances of binging later on in the day will increase dramatically. Keeping your meals spread out evenly during the day will keep you feeling full, focused, and energized. Your metabolism will also work more efficiently if you stick to a normal eating schedule. Pressed for time? Hate breakfast? NO MORE EXCUSES!9.) Eat slow: Put the brakes on fast eating. This isn’t a pie eating contest. This is time for you to enjoy every morsel of your meal. Use all of your senses while eating. It takes approximately 20 minutes for the stomach to send signals to the brain that it’s full. Take smaller bites, put the utensil down, chew slowly, and you won’t feel that uncomfortable I’M-GOING-TO-BURST feeling ever again. This is what I needed! read more..

Ottawa Public Health (OPH) is reporting an increased incidence at local hospitals of people with stomach flu symptoms, often associated with Norovirus, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and stomach cramps. In order to limit transmission of the virus in hospitals and to reduce the chance of further spread, the following infection control measures have been implemented in several area hospitals:Additional housekeeping measures Prompt identification and isolation of symptomatic patients Increased promotion of hand hygiene Hospital visitor policy is being reinforced and signage has been posted at the entry of the units Local hospitals are also trying to reduce the chance of cases coming through the Emergency Department. If you are experiencing typical flu-like symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea, please do not visit the Emergency Department unless you feel it is necessary to get care there. We recommend you drink lots of fluids and see your family doctor if your symptoms last longer than three days or if you have bloody diarrhea or a high fever. At this time of year, increased cases of Norovirus circulate in the community and can affect schools, hospitals, day care centres and long term care facilities, and anywhere groups of people gather. To avoid infection with Norovirus, we recommend the following: Wash your hands frequently Stay home from school or work if you are illAvoid visiting people in hospital or long-term care homes when ill If you think you have Norovirus, the following will help you and help prevent others from getting sick with Norovirus: Stay home and rest for at least 24 hours after your vomiting/diarrhea have resolved and you feel well Do not prepare or handle food that will be eaten by others For more information: Hazel Harding, Communications AdvisorThe Ottawa Hospital613-737-8460 Ottawa Public Health Information Line613-580-6744 (TTY: 613-580-9656) Background - Norovirus Norovirus is a well known “Small round-structured virus” that circulates rapidly through groups of people. It is transmitted by direct contact with the virus, either through contaminated hands, or possibly through droplet spread during vomiting. It can also be transmitted in contaminated food and drink, and ingested directly. It takes less than 100 virus particles to result in illness (it has been suggested that it may take as few as ten virus particles), and so infection is easily transmitted from person to person. The main symptoms of Norovirus infection begin approximately 24-48 hours after exposure to the virus. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal cramps. A low grade fever may occur and dehydration is possible. The illness usually lasts from one day to three days; however, Norovirus can be spread for up to three days after the symptoms stop, and some people may carry the virus for up to two weeks after the symptoms end. For more information on how to prevent the spread of germs, please visit ottawa.ca/health You can also connect with OPH on Facebook and Twitter (@ottawahealth) for the latest public health information. read more..
