Eating Disorder-Binge Eating

I'm just about 15-20 pounds heavier than I'd like to be, and I am a vegan and as well don't eat gluten. I exercise at least 5 days a week. I'm really healthy! But I have trouble with binge eating, a habit leftover from an old eating disorder. I am having so much trouble breaking old habits. Do you have any tips for how to quit the habit of overeating? I'm so tired of having this extra weight on me

Think about why you binge. Do you do it because you are not eating enough throughout the day? Do you do it because of stress or negative emotions? Or maybe you binge on certain foods because you restrict yourself of them? You obviously don’t have to answer that to me, but think about that. Maybe keep a journal and write down when you binge and how you were feeling when you did it and before you did it. As far as overeating in general, instead of taking a heaping plate full of food or grabbing a bunch of what you want to snack on, try your hardest to take a portioned size. If you are not eating enough or frequently enough throughout the day, that might be contributing to some of it. Try and practice mindful eating the best that you can. When you feel like you are craving something or need to binge, have a small healthy, guiltless snack. Some grapes, strawberries, kiwi, banana, an apple. I read that an apple helps aid weight loss and can help you let go of binge eating (X), but I’m not sure that’d help you much because you are a healthy eater already. I definitely do suggest keeping a food diary and writing your thoughts and feelings. It might begin to help (: read more..

I have really fat upper arms, and I was hoping you could provide me with some workouts to tone them?

You can’t lose the fat on your arms by just doing arm Workouts, but you certainly can tone them up with some muscle. I definitely suggest push ups and tricep dips. If you need/want to modify them, “girl” push ups are definitely okay and modify the dips with a bend in the knee’s. Here are some more exercises for arms. I think regular and forearm planks challenge the arms as well as the core so correctly hold that pose for as long as you can. If you have dumbbells, that will help as well so you can do some of the other exercises on there. There are also some other arm stuff in my workouts page.You can also, of course, lose some fat in your arms by eating healthy and getting regular exercise. I can go into depth about that if you’d like. Just let me know. read more..

5 Heart-Healthy Foods

Blueberries top the list as one of the most powerful disease-fighting foods. That’s because they contain anthocyanins, the antioxidant responsible for their dark blue color. These delicious jewels are packed with fiber, vitamin C, and are available all year long. Boost heart health by adding them into your diet regularly. Here’s how:
1. Top your whole-grain cereal with fresh or frozen blueberries to add delicious flavor, a dose of fiber, and heart-healthy antioxidants.
2. Power up pancakes, waffles, or muffins with fresh, frozen, or dried blueberries for a nutritious breakfast.
3. Eat them plain or mix with other fruit for a low-calorie, high-fiber tasty fruit salad, dessert, or snack.
Recipe idea: Make an irresistible trifle by layering lady fingers, light whipped topping or low-fat pudding, and blueberries. Or puree a batch of berries for a breakfast or dessert sauce.
This cold-water fish is a great source of protein and is also packed with heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids. The American Heart Association advises eating salmon and other omega-3 rich foods twice a week for benefits that go beyond heart health. Americans love salmon because it is so versatile, easy to cook, and tastes great.
1. Salmon is easy to prepare on the grill, in the oven or microwave, or on the stovetop. Save leftovers to toss into pasta dishes, make into salmon cakes, add to salads, or mix into dips or spreads.
2. Smoked salmon comes in two varieties. The raw type is commonly used in appetizers and on bagels with cream cheese and capers. The dry smoked type has more of a cooked appearance. You can enjoy it the same way as the raw style, and add it to cooked dishes such as pasta.
3. Salmon cooks in a matter of minutes and its delicate texture quickly absorbs and showcases the flavor of added ingredients. For example, toss chunks of salmon into a chowder of corn and potatoes, or wrap salmon with herbs and chopped onion and tomatoes in parchment or aluminum foil and grill or bake 12 minutes for a satisfying meal.
Recipe idea: Marinate salmon in a lime, onion, garlic, and soy mixture for 15 minutes before grilling for a delicious fish taco or grilled fish sandwich.Soy Protein
This inexpensive, high-quality protein contains fiber, vitamins, and minerals — all the ingredients for a heart-healthy meal. Also, a diet rich in soy protein can lower triglycerides, which help prevent cardiovascular disease and keep your heart strong and healthy. In those with high cholesterol levels,the benefits of soy foods are due to their high levels of polyunsaturated fats, fiber, vitamins, and minerals.1. Pack a soy protein bar or a bag of soy nuts for a quick snack during the day.
2. Edamame (the Japanese name for green soybeans) are snacks even kids will love! Find these nutritious nuggets in the freezer section at your supermarket. Boil them, then serve warm in the pod. Pop them out of the pod to eat plain or with a low-fat dip.
3. Tofu, made of soy beans, takes on the flavor of spices and foods you cook with it. Saute cubed tofu with green and red peppers, sliced garlic, and a dash or two of curry powder. Or add tofu to soups for a healthy dose of fat-free protein.
Recipe idea: Soy milk is not just for the lactose-intolerant. Make a nutritious beverage with chocolate soy milk, a banana, and some ice for a delicious smoothie.

Global Climate Change-Lifestyle Change-Vegan

Hey ! For my end of the year final in my writing class I am writing a 20 page paper on the Yogi Lifestyle. Your blog is where a lot of my information is coming from. I wanted to know though, (if you don't mind) why you chose to be vegan, and how your life has changed since you made this lifestyle change. I would be quoting you in my paper if that is okay ? : )

Hey! Aw that is super cool! I am glad that my blog is able to provide you with some information and that you want me to be apart of it (:     Currently I am not full Vegan yet. I’m half-vegan I guess you could say since the only dairy I consume is in Morning Star patties, chocolate, and Ensure when I have them. I will transition to full vegan as soon as I feel I am ready. However, maybe my answer will be still be valid, so lets just say, for the purpose of your paper, that I am full vegan (if that works for you).     I chose this lifestyle for three reasons: For my health, for the animals, and for the planet. Everything that we do impacts not just ourselves but everything around us. Animal farming is the number one cause of global climate change, 99% of all land animals are used for factory farming (in which the the standards for ethical treatment continue to decline), and studies have proven that a vegetarian/vegan lifestyles are healthier for the body.      My life has vastly changed since making these dietary changes. My compassion, love, and respect for animals has grown further than I thought it could. You don’t realize how much love you have for another being until you stop putting it on your plate. It’s effected my body greatly as well. 60% of adults can not digest digest milk and most of them either don’t know it or choose not to make a healthier dietary change. Not consuming dairy has made such a huge impact on my body, especially being lactose intolerant. I can’t even begin to explain how much my digestive system has thanked me for not consuming dairy, and not eating meat has made my body feel “lighter”, more energetic, healthier, and much happier.      I hope this was okay? … and not too much. haha. When a Pound Is Not a Pound

healthy-thin-happy:One thing many people don’t realise is that many factors can influence a person’s weight which do not reflect that person’s Body Fat. For example, two cups of water weigh one pound. If you tend to retain water or bloat, the scale can easily rise a few pounds without a change in what you have eaten. However, for dieters the effects of water weight can be severe. Here’s an example of when a pound is NOT a pound:

  • You eat an extra dessert over the weekend
  • You weigh yourself the following day or day after
  • The scale shoots up 5 pounds - and you believe you’ve gained five pounds of fat.
Why is this NOT possible?
  • Because you must have eaten a caloric excess of 17,500 calories to gain 5 pounds of fat.
  • 3500 EXCESS CALORIES (by excess, we do not include your BMR and daily activity) make up 1 pound of fat.
  • It is very very difficult to overeat by this amount, even when splurging.
So why is there this dramatic Weight Gain?Water weight. Any time the scale suddenly rises or falls, it is usually because of fluid shift in the body. Eating high-sodium foods can also provoke water retention (not fat retention) in salt-sensitive individuals. Yet how easily chronic dieters believe they did something wrong; they must have single-handedly gobbled five pounds worth of food. No, no no!Similarly, losing two pounds immediately from an hour or aerobics is not a two-pound fat loss. Rather, it’s mostly water loss from sweat. Jubilant dieters who think they have lost 10 pounds in a week may be in for an unwanted surprise. Whilst it may be true that the scale indicated ten pounds less than when they weighed one week ago, the question is: What KIND of weight did they lose? To lose ten pounds of fat in one week requires an energy deficit of 35,000 calories, or a deficit of 5,000 calories every day! The average woman only eats about 1,500 to 1,600 calories per day. The sad reality is that this person is losing a lot of water weight, usually at the expense of their muscles, due to the process of muscle-wasting. Muscle is made up of mainly water (about 70%)When a hungry body is not given enough calories, the body cannibalises itself for an energy source. The prime directive of the body is that it must have energy, at any cost - it’s part of the survival mechanism. When a muscle cell is destroyed, water is released and eventually excreted - that’s your precious Weight Loss. This whittled-away muscle contributes to lowering your metabolism. Muscles are metabolically active tissue - generally the more muscles we have, the more calories we burn. Hence why men burn more calories than women - they have more muscle mass.Increased muscle mass, while metabolically more active and desireable, weighs more than fat. Muscle also takes up less space than fat. Although beneficial, this often frustrates dieters by the rising, or unchanging scale number. The scale does NOT reflect your body composition. Just like weighing a piece of steak at the butcher’s does not tell you how lean it is. It’s better off to stay away from the scales for as long as possible and take measurements, or discover your body fat percentage instead and work towards body composition (less fat, lean muscle) goals rather than any kind of weight-loss goal that destroy the integrity of your structure and your well-being, too. read more..
