Health Services-Physical Health-Digital Story-Mental Health-Street Youth

Street-Youth Experiences Told Through Digital...

Street-Youth Experiences Told Through Digital StoriesStreet-involved youth are a vulnerable population whose experiences are not always captured in other youth-targeted surveys. To address this gap, the Health Sexuality and Risk Reduction & the Epidemiology Programs at Ottawa Public Health (OPH) recently released the results of the Enhanced Street Youth Surveillance System (E-SYS) 2011 and companion digital stories - a creative interpretation and presentation of their results. In one digital story, we follow a young man’s introduction to Drugs and his subsequent downward spiral. The personal story is intertwined with findings from the survey: there are more than 1200 youth in Ottawa who have been without a home for three or more days in the last six months; 1 in 5 street-involved youth have injected drugs; half of street involved youth who inject drugs have sex in order to get something like drugs, money, or a place to stay. In the second digital story, a nineteen year old woman suffering from alcoholism, describes her dangerous lifestyle and the toll it takes on her physical and mental health. Plagued by frequent blackouts and conflicts, she represents the daily and nightly struggles that alcohol and drug addicted street-involved youth endure.Behaviours and topics assessed by E-SYS include several dimensions of the street-involved youths’ lives:

  • demographics
  • sexual orientation
  • alcohol use
  • non-injection and injection drug use
  • amount of time spent on the street
  • mental and physical health, education level
  • employment and legal/illegal sources of income
  • jail/prison time
  • services accessed/gaps in service experienced
  • barriers to accessing health services
  • risky sexual behaviours/coerced or transactional sex
  • pregnancysexually transmitted and blood-borne infection rates
The findings of E-SYS are particularly important for providers of outreach services for youth.  The digital stories can be used by providers and can be shared among youth. read more..

Stuff from yesterdays small grocery trip. I need to get paid already so I can stock up at Clark’s. The Clif bars were from a few days ago but wanted to add them to the photo. Got more Luna bars because they are still on sale for $1 each. Also trying a new juice. I don’t think I’ve had this one yet so I’m going to have it with bananas and the frozen pineapples I got. Got bread because it was on sale and I really need to get rid of the frozen patties slowly adding up in my freezer. Nothing spectacular here. Just wanted to update. I’ll have some cool stuff to show you all sooner or later. I’m going to wait a month until I really stock up because we’re moving (again) and it sucks having another extra few boxes for my food. I’ll be in a much nicer area and neighborhood (closer to where I lived last year) so I’ll be taking more walks, pulling out my roller skates, and hopefully buying a bike. Alright, I’m leavin. Be back later tonight. read more..

Meet Toni, a strong supporter of smoke-free patios.Toni has worked in the restaurant industry for more than 30 years and as a result, developed lung disease from second-hand smoke exposure. In the late 90’s, his health scare prompted him to open up the first smoke-free coffee shop in the ByWard Market.Toni now owns two smoke-free restaurants, “Firkin and Knight” and “Firkin and Flyer”.  He was one of the restaurant owners that made his patios smoke-free voluntarily, before the regulations came into effect.  Toni is confident that Ottawa’s new smoke-free patio regulations will create a better and healthier environment for those who enjoy dining outdoors. Natural Hair-Hair Growth

Hair growth - The natural way.

deidreelliott:I’ve already talked about makeup and skin care, now lets talk about hair care.     I used to have troubles with trying to grow my hair out. It hardly grew half an inch in one year. I used to dye it often, I used heat on it every day, and I wasn’t all that healthy. (Remember, your health isn’t determined by your doctors say-so. They’re not there to tell you that you don’t exercise enough or eat a balanced diet, they’re just there to make sure that nothing is more seriously wrong with you.) Everything about my hair changed during the summer of 2010. I left 11th grade with shoulder length, bright red hair, and started 12th grade with brown (my natural color, though dyed to rid of the red), healthy, natural hair. My hair has grown a tremendous amount since then - even in the last few months alone. I was nowhere near as healthy as I am now a year ago.      Someone once asked me how long it took me to grow my hair. Though there might have been a miscommunication between the anon and I as far as what hair they saw (my real hair or my extensions), the relevance still stands. Not only am I growing my hair out, but I’m trying to keep it healthy. When I say I don’t use heat on my hair, I mean it. Not for prom, not for pictures, and definitely not for my high school graduation. My hair and skin health is just as important as my physical and mental health.      Here are some ways to keep your hair healthy and growing. Remember, the healthier you are and the better you take care of your hair, the faster it will grow.

  • Health: Diet and Exercise. You are what you eat, right? So in order to maintain healthy hair, healthy skin, and a healthy body inside and out, you need to eat healthy. Cardiovascular exercise will get the blood pumping and send more blood and oxygen to your hair follicles.
- Vitamin A: Lengthens and strengthens hair. Carrots, spinach, melons, papayas, mangoes and tomatoes. - Vitamin B: Not getting enough vitamin B is the most significant cause for poor Hair Growth and hair loss. Experts advise taking a supplement daily for 3 months.- Vitamin E: Anti oxidant that fights free radical damage and enhances hair growth. Nuts and whole cereals.- Biotin: You can either get this by eating meat, eggs, and poultry, or taking it in vitamin form.
  • Get your hair trimmed. Get your hair trimmed when you have dead ends. More energy is spent repairing dead ends than on growing your hair.
  • Heat damage. Limit exposure to hot sun, curling irons, straighteners, hair dryers, and very hot water. Hot water isn’t good for your skin anyways, so take warm showers instead.
  • Hair dyes. Coloring your hair is damaging, especially if you’re stripping the color out (bleach). Check out this website about organic hair dyes and hair dye advice.
  • Hair bands. Pulling your hair too tightly and putting the hair band in too tightly can damage your hair. You know that headache you get when your hair is in a ponytail? That is bad. You’re stretching your hair and basically pulling it right out of your head. You can safely wear your hair up sometimes, but too often will be damaging. Try using hair scrunchies or clips if you need to put your hair up.
  • Washing your hair. I don’t even do this correctly. Don’t wash your hair too often, but wash it enough. It is ideal to wash your hair every other day. Don’t let the oils in your hair take over (which I used to do), and don’t let the shampoo destroy the oils by washing too often (which I do).  A good conditioner is also important. Try using Mane ‘n Tail. It’s a horse shampoo, but it’s good for hair growth and strength.
  • Brushing your hair. Don’t brush your hair while its wet. It doesn’t have any elasticity while its wet and it will stretch, thin, and break. Brush it when it dries. Brushing your hair often enough is good, its sort of like massaging your scalp and encouraging your hair to grow. However, I also read that it’s bad to brush t read more..

We're looking for something fairly easy to follow...I know you must get this question a lot but if you have any suggestions that would be very helpful! Thank you and I love your blog :)

This is actually the first time I’ve gotten this question, so I have no idea how to answer it. I’ve never done any cleansing or anything. I just eat healthy, drink a lot of smoothies, and drink a lot of water. I’ve only really read into one, a 21-day Detox. The details are in the link, and in the link on the post. You might like it. I think you should just make sure that you aren’t fasting completely, lacking important nutrients, or not getting enough calories. I think detoxes and such are dumb when people do that. I hope this helps! Thank you (: read more..

Essential Fatty Acids-Omega 3 Fatty Acids-Irritated Skin-Antioxidants-Berries

fasterbetterharderstronger:BERRIES FOR BEAUTY: Blueberries,...

fasterbetterharderstronger:

  1. BERRIES FOR BEAUTY: Blueberries, strawberries & blackberries are all super high in antioxidants. The beauty of antioxidants is they can protect your skin from the inside out by guarding your cells from damage. Eat them as a snack, blend them in a smoothie or add to you morning.
  2. GREEN BEANS-Wind back the clock and stock up on foods like spinach, kale, broccoli and romaine. All of these contain vitamin B, E and C, as well as antioxidants that help fight off free radicals. They’re also one of the top sources of beta carotene, a powerful antioxidant that helps repair and renew your skin to give it a youthful glow.
  3. ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS – Fish like Salmon, Tuna and Trout are rich in Omega 3 fatty acids which are essential ingredients to baby soft skin. Omega 3 fatty acids are widely known to help soften dry skin by holding in moisture, which helps decrease the look of wrinkles and plumps up skin.
  4. EGGS – Eggs are widely recognized as a great source of protein, however it is also an important component for clear skin. Eggs are a good source of zinc which acts by controlling the production of oil in the skin, and can also help control some of the hormones that cause breakouts.
  5. AVOCADO– Avocado contains ‘good’ fats which are essential to a healthy diet and a smooth complexion.  The monounsaturated fats and Vitamin E help soothe red, irritated skin, whilst Vitamin C helps fight inflammation.
  6. WATER – It’s no secret that water is the holy grail of health. Our body weight is made up of 70% water, so in order keep healthy, we need to stay hydrated. When the skin is properly hydrated, it looks fresh and radiant. Drink at least eight glasses of h20 a day and notice the difference in your energy levels and complexion.
  7. GREEN TEA – When we aren’t drinking our eight glasses of water a day, we should be having a cup of tea. Green tea is full of antioxidants and contains polyphenols which help to reduce the signs of aging like wrinkles and lost of skin elasticity.

Natural Sugar-Carbohydrate-Plant Foods-Calories-Fruit

girlgrowingsmall:fuckyeah-tonedandfit:THE BENEFITS OF SUGAR...

girlgrowingsmall:fuckyeah-tonedandfit:THE BENEFITS OF SUGAR IN FRUITSThis idea that fruit is somehow a bad thing to eat came into full swing with the low carb diet craze, but the myth persists. Not a week goes by that I don’t hear someone tell me that they avoid fruit because it’s “all sugar” or “loaded with carbs.” So, I want to set the record straight and come to the defense of some of the world’s healthiest foods – fresh, whole fruits.I’ll tackle the “fruit is all sugar” statement first – because it’s just plain wrong. Fresh fruit offers so much more than the natural sugar it contains – including water, vitamins, minerals, fiber and phytonutrients (those naturally-occurring plant compounds that have wide ranging beneficial effects on the body). Where else can you get a package like that for about 75 calories per serving? The idea that fruit is “loaded with carbs” or is “full of sugar” needs to be put into perspective, too. It’s true that when you eat fruit, the overwhelming majority of the calories you consume are supplied by carbohydrate – mostly in the form of fructose, which is the natural sugar in the fruit. But that’s the nature not just of fruit, but of all plant foods – they’re predominantly carbohydrate (and that means not just natural sugars, but healthy starches as well as structural elements, like cellulose, that provide fiber). When you eat vegetables, the majority of the calories you’re eating come from carbohydrate, too. But you don’t hear people complaining that vegetables are “loaded with carbs.”Before dismissing foods as being loaded with sugar, or too high in carbs, consider not only the amount of sugar or carbs you’re eating, but the form of the carbohydrate, too. There’s a big difference between the nutritional value of the natural carbohydrates found in fruits and other plant foods – the sugars, starches and fibers – and what’s found (or, more accurately, what’s not found) in all the empty calories we eat from added sugars that find their way into everything from brownies to barbecue sauce.Faced with a serving of fruit, how much sugar are we talking about, anyway? An average orange has only about 12 grams of natural sugar (about 3 teaspoons) and a cup of strawberries has only about 7 grams – that’s less than two teaspoons. And either way, you’re also getting 3 grams of fiber, about a full day’s worth of vitamin C, healthy antioxidants and some folic acid and potassium to boot – and it’ll only cost you about 50 or 60 calories. “All sugar?” I think not.By contrast, a 20-ounce cola will set you back about 225 calories and, needless to say, won’t be supplying any antioxidants, vitamins, minerals or fiber. You’ll just be chugging down some carbonated water, maybe some artificial color and flavor, and somewhere in the neighborhood of 60 grams of added sugar (about 1/3 of a cup). You won’t get fat on eating fruit. You won’t be consuming an insane, over-the-top amount of sugar. Don’t be afraid of eating fruit, because they are the best thing you can give your body. read more..

Spaghetti Squash-Fresh Produce

Hi, I recently moved to a new city "am living on my own for the first time. I have been trying to adjust and am just beginning to start working out regularly but I have been seeing many posts on tumblr reminding me that diet is everything. Living with three other roommates and being a student, I don't have a lot of extra money so it's hard for me to buy my own groceries for myself and to control

Hello! It’s true. Eating healthy is definitely most important. I don’t ever recommend counting calories because that’s an unnecessary hassle that could turn into a problem/addiction and calories don’t determine how healthy you are eating. Eating healthy is actually less expensive than regular eating (I guess you could call it that) if you know how to do the shopping. You don’t need to buy a bunch of expensive health food items.     Think about the foods that you eat that you don’t need. I assume you eat a lot of easy meals, maybe mac and cheese, cup of noodle soup, things like that. Even if you don’t, think about related things to that stuff that you don’t need to be eating. Fresh produce, depending on what is in season and where you buy it, can be cheap and you can do a lot with it. Even frozen produce (which is equally as healthy). You could definitely eat a lot of fruits and veggies for a good price, along with other things like oatmeal, sandwiches, burrito’s, wraps, etc. Fresh produce tends to be cheaper at local markets and little places like that. Figure out and write down about how much money you have a month for food, the things that you want to/should buy, the things that you don’t need to eat/buy, and work with that all from there. You could also write down the prices for some healthier foods that you want and make a grocery list and figure out all what you could buy. Coupons also come in handy. They don’t usually have them for healthier foods, depending on what store it is, but they can definitely help you save a few bucks that you could be spending on other items.     A simple way to eat healthier is to just to make swaps. White bread for whole grain or wheat, quinoa instead of pasta, or spaghetti squash or regular squash as the spaghetti (since the actual spaghetti squash is a winter fruit and more expensive in the summer), healthier cereals (whole grain cereals like honey bunches of oats), non-dairy milks like almond milk (vanilla is good), swap regular butter and mayo for Earth Balance natural spreads and veganaise (even if you’re not vegan, those items are healthier), greek yogurt for regular, healthier peanut butter (no sugar added or high fructose syrup), etc.     So it’s not really about having extra money, but using the money more wisely when buying. It might seem a bit tough at first but I think once you get the hang of it, once you figure out what foods you will be buying and like, it’ll get a lot easier. I hope this helps! read more..

Ottawa’s Beaches Now Smoke-FreeOn Saturday June 16th, Ottawa’s four supervised beaches – Britannia, Westboro, Mooney’s Bay and Petrie Island – officially opened for the summer season.  Ottawa’s new smoke-free regulations now prohibits smoking on the beaches in addition to parks, playgrounds, sports fields, ByWard and Parkdale Market stands and outdoor restaurant and bar patios and terraces.   The beach at Petrie Island in Orleans was the place to be on Saturday where thousands of Ottawa residents participated in the 3rd annual Carivibe Beach Festival.  This annual event is a celebration of Caribbean culture where festival participants enjoyed non-stop entertainment, classic Caribbean cuisine and beverages as well as cultural clothing and accessories-all within a smoke-free environment.Listen to what these festival participants had to say about Ottawa’s smoke-free beaches. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aKdr2ELSMpE To learn more about Ottawa’s new smoke-free regulations, or if you need help quitting smoking, please visit ottawa.ca/smokefree or call Ottawa Public Health Information 613-580-6744 (TTY: 613-580-9656). Medical Officer Of Health-Environment Canada-Ottawa Residents-Consecutive Days-Heat Exhaustion

Heat Warning in effect for June 19-21

The Medical Officer of Health is issuing a Heat Warning for June 19-21. A heat warning is declared when Environment Canada forecasts a humidex of 40 or hotter for at least two consecutive days. It is important to know that extreme heat can cause dehydration, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and even death.  Infants, young children and the homeless are also at greater risk from extreme heat, along with people taking medications like anti-Parkinsons and antidepressants. OPH is encouraging people to check on family, friends and neighbours who may be isolated or vulnerable to the heat and need help accessing places to cool down.To avoid heat-related illnesses, Ottawa residents and visitors should:

  • Drink plenty of fluids, preferably water and avoid caffeine and alcohol
  • Avoid strenuous physical activity outdoors
  • Avoid direct exposure to the sun and seek shade and shelter at the first signs of heat exposure
  • Wear lightweight and loose clothing
  • Spend at least two hours a day in an air-conditioned location, including shopping malls, local libraries or neighbourhood community centres
  • Never leave children, the elderly or pets unattended in a car, even with the windows partly rolled down
Residents can cool down at City of Ottawa pools, splash pads, wading pools, beaches and community centres, as well as Ottawa Public Libraries. In addition, Rainbow Cinemas in the St. Laurent Centre has partnered with the City of Ottawa to provide reduced ticket rates to help people access air conditioning and to cool down during heat warnings.  High air pollution often occurs during hot weather conditions. People with breathing and heart problems and parents and caregivers of children should pay attention to the hourly Air Quality Health Index available at airhealth.ca or at 1-866-688-3810.As part of the City of Ottawa Heat Action Plan, Ottawa Public Health (OPH) closely monitors the weather forecast for heat, smog and UV index levels and notifies residents, service providers and media when thresholds are met.  We offer protective and proactive advice on how to deal with these summer conditions. The heat, smog and UV thresholds are:
  • Heat Advisory  (humidex of 36 or more for a least two consecutive days)
  • Heat Warning (humidex of 40 or more for at least two consecutive days)
  • Heat Emergency (humidex of 45 or more for at least two consecutive days or situational factors)
  • Smog Advisory (based on air quality index (AQI) of > 50)
  • UV Index Warning ( UV index of 10 or higher)
For additional information on ways to “beat the heat”, visit ottawa.ca/health or call Ottawa Public Health Information at 613-580-6744. Connect with us on Facebook and Twitter @ottawahealth. read more..

Fashion Business-Body Image-Facebook

Body-shaming on Facebook.

claireruns:I am so fucking sick of seeing comments like “if you want to get me interested in this ad, show me a REAL MAN” (targeted towards a man who was very slender - tell me exactly, what is a “real man”?) or “she looks anorexic” (targeted towards a small fashion business where the models often read and reply to comments/questions) or “yuck, she’s too fat to wear that” (since when did you have to be a certain size to wear a skirt?).Ugh. No.I report every single one of them.I know Facebook probably do nothing but it makes me feel better.People keep complaining about the state of our mental health and body image. And yet comments like these are completely the norm. They’re promoting the ideals the media has pressured upon them and, most likely subconsciously, are giving into them. Believing that the images we see on TV are supposedly a reality. We’ve been exposed for so long to a society that openly judges another person’s body that people do it without thought. People don’t stop to consider how they could potentially be hurting someone’s feelings. It upsets me beyond belief.I agree completely! My friend is a fashion photog and tags the models in her photos, and sometimes people comment things about their bodies looking ugly and too skinny and how they need to eat (and obviously they DO eat) and it’s so frustrating… like, hello, they see these comments. A long while back a guy I knew was making such rude comments and I was so pissed, I commented after each of his (he felt the need to comment on many photos only pointing out the flaws of her body) telling him off about it. This stuff heats me up, too. We’re all real. We are human beings. We have feelings. read more..

If you delay these times, you’re going to be hungry, and the hungrier you are, the more likely you are going to cheat and eat fatty junk food. According to Dr. Oz, the big rule of thumb is that you need to have dinner more than three hours before you go to bed, so that you aren’t going to bed with a full stomach.
  1. Best time to weigh yourself: Weighing yourself first thing in the morning will provide you with the most accurate read on your weight since it’s after you go to the bathroom, when you aren’t wearing much clothing, and before you eat breakfast.
  2. Best time of the day to go grocery shopping: Heading to the grocery store at 10 a.m. is the best time because you are still full from breakfast, but there’s been an hour or two since you first woke up, so your blood sugar levels are at a stable point. If you go grocery shopping when you are hungry, your blood sugar levels are low, which impairs your judgement and therefore, you’ll be more inclined to buy unhealthy sugary or fattening treats.
  3. Best time of day to workout: Morning! A new study found that subjects who were put on a high-fat diet and worked out before breakfast gained no weight after six weeks, while those who worked out after breakfast gained three pounds. When you exercise in the morning — cardio and strength training is key — you kick-start your metabolism, which will help you burn more calories throughout your day.
  4. Best time of the day to visit the doctor’s office: If you need to go to the doc’s, it’s best to schedule your appointment first thing in the morning. Not only will this decrease your waiting room time since you’ll secure the first appointment of the day, but it also means you won’t be overly hungry if you needed to fast before a morning lab test.
  5. Best time to boost your metabolism: The best time to rev up your metabolism is at 8 a.m. At this time, you’ll be getting up, weighing, yourself, and hopefully exercising, which is when your metabolism is the slowest and needs a nice boost. It’s also wise to have a glass of cold water. Cold water will fill up your stomach, and you’ll burn calories to warm the water up.
  6. Best time to cheat on a diet: Talk about saving the best one for last! If you want to sneak in one or two of your favorite foods on a particular day, there’s actually a time when you can enjoy them and get away with it. The best time to eat fats is at 10 a.m because fat acts as a source of energy, so have your fats in the morning so you canburn them off all day. For carbs, 1 p.m is the best time to indulge since they increase your level of serotonin and will prevent snacking throughout the rest of the day — yay for pizza for lunch. Sugar intake is 2 p.m since this will give you instant energy during your midafternoon slump, and 5 p.m is the best time for an alcoholic beverage since in small doses it can act as a stimulant, but in high doses it’s a depressant, so at 5, this will give your body lots of time to metabolize it by bedtime. Three cheers for happy hour!
